Come on baby, do the Ghost Dance

Everybody's doing it! Almost exactly a year ago, I speculated that Islamists are modern-day Ghost Dancers. Then Jinnderella picked up the meme (some good comments here). Now I realize that some of the Islamist's de-facto allies are doing it too. James Taranto:

It's not just that the media are biased against conservatives and Republicans, though they certainly are. It is that they see every war as another Vietnam and every supposed scandal as another Watergate--at least when Republicans are in the White House, which they usually are.

The obsession with Vietnam and Watergate is central to the alienation between the press and the people. After all, these were triumphs for the crusading press but tragedies for America. And the press's quest for more such triumphs--futile, so far, after more than 30 years--is what is behind the scandals at both Newsweek and CBS.

(If you get the other reference in the title, keep quiet or you'll show your age.)

David, I think that Gulf I really exacerbated the relationship failure between the right and the press. On tv, the reporters looked incredibly stupid, asking the briefers to reveal classified over and over. One would have hoped that the embeds in Gulf II would have helped heal that rift, by the established press instantly percieved the embeds as competition, and concluded that they had become corrupted ideaologically by the units they were attached to. The antagonistic relationship developed during the Vietnam war carries on to this day.

And, part of any ghost dance culture, as defined in cultural anthropology, is a fiercely negative reaction to some modern technology (the internet?) which is percieved as disenfranchising the ghost dancers. ;)

I think that the essence of the Ghost Dance is dancing with the ghost of your remembered past, in desperate but fervent belief that it will come to life, knowing that the alternative is extinction.

The irony being that the extinction is semantic, the result of defining victory in such a way that it ensures your defeat.

Even people born after Grand Funk Railroad's hit might recognize the reference from Kylie Minogue ... no, then again, that was 17 years ago! I'm still trapped in the 80s; blogs are like my windows to the future, er, present.

Well I guess it shows my age that I've never heard of Kylie Minogue - 1988 was the year I moved to Israel.

"Little Eva" is the reference.

should you muster time and courage to go read my work you may ((or may not)) become aware that my take on G-host danswers involves effective peace instantation. If you manage to relate to trees you ought to go see the link related to both aspects of healing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Compost Sorry state of the world seems reflected on this page since an addition I made last week has been removed (without a trace) although it concerns absolutely vital (trace mineral and seriously long term cycle related) compost ingredients. To wit, I added a link to David Yarrow's topsoil page with a good overview of [http://www.championtrees.org/topsoil/index.htm 'rock dust'] properties (understanding thereof and subsequent conscious use). I consider this all the more offensive since rock dust is nowhere else to be found on wikipedia and so I'd like the deleter to explain hirself asap. piet 12:49 GMT

your kind however, defines victorious exultation semantically (merely inversions of past but equally unforgettable insults) and that spells extinction for more than yourselves unfortunately but semantic palaces are rapidly leveled and the redeployment of the rapidly cheapening rubble is timely and can't be held back much longer; you got one thing sorta right though, semantics dispenses illusions that cost you dear, and that you could just as easily be you my dear.
